Following in the footsteps of other international football clubs like Juventus’s deal with Gucci and Paris Saint-Germain’s X Jordan range, Orlando Pirates have now also launched a streetwear range.

The range, which was unveiled on 6 February, includes cool unisex T-shirts and hoodies, jersey dresses for women, and cute baby rompers. The Soweto Giants took to social media to share the news with their adoring fans. News of the new venture by the Buccaneers was met with mixed reactions from fans. This is not least due to the team’s inconsistent form and calls to sack their coach, Josef Zinnbauer.

One fan said he would not buy any of the streetwear items until the coach was gone while others said Orlando Pirates are focussing more on modelling than playing “proper” football. Several fans also thought the merchandise was too pricey, with hoodies selling for up to R799 and T-shirts for R299. Just a few hours after the announcement, the Sea Robbers secured a 1-0 win against uThongathi FC that saw them advance to the next stage of the Nedbank Cup.

This was followed by an impressive game on Tuesday night that saw their striker, Deon Hotto, become the titleholder for scoring the fastest goal in the DStv Premiership. He scored the goal in 47 seconds and Bucs went on to win that match against Cape Town City 2-0, with Vincent Pule scoring the second goal of that match. This game also stretched their unbeaten at home record. It has been more than two years since Orlando Pirates last lost a game on their own turf. The new merchandise is available from the Orlando Pirates online shop.
