Mavuso Msimang, a stalwart of the African National Congress (ANC) and deputy president of the ANC Veterans League, has resigned from the ruling party after more than six decades of association.

Msimang cited corruption as a primary reason for his departure, expressing concern that pervasive corruption within the ANC and the government is a significant contributor to the country's failures.

In his resignation statement, Msimang asserted that corruption has infiltrated various sectors, including state-owned entities like Transnet and Eskom, negatively impacting the nation's economic performance. He highlighted how corruption has contributed to the crisis at Eskom, resulting in severe load shedding that has adversely affected the economy. Msimang also pointed out the mismanagement at Transnet, causing a backlog at ports and disrupting the freight-haulage system, ultimately affecting consumers and potentially leading to ships avoiding South African ports.

Msimang criticized the ANC for its perceived lack of urgency in addressing socio-economic challenges, despite the ANC Veterans League's call to bar individuals implicated in corruption by commissions of inquiry. He warned of an imminent economic collapse due to mismanagement and corruption, pointing out the rising youth unemployment rate. Additionally, Msimang raised concerns about the ANC's financial woes, mentioning the party's liquidation threat from Ezulwinin Investments for failing to pay over R100 million for campaign materials during the 2019 elections.

The ANC, according to Msimang, is facing a decline in public support, as reflected in polls indicating widespread dissatisfaction with corruption. He lamented the stark contrast between the lavish lifestyles of ANC leaders and the prevailing poverty in the country. Despite the ANC Veterans League's resolution urging the ANC to prevent individuals implicated in corruption from serving as parliamentarians, Msimang noted the lack of action on this front.

Mavuso Msimang's resignation underscores the deep-seated issues of corruption and mismanagement within the ANC, reflecting broader challenges facing South Africa. His departure adds to the voices calling for accountability and reform within the ruling party to address the pressing socio-economic issues facing the nation.
