“I just thought, I’m anxious, let me just drink some wine,” the Atlanta star shared

LaKeith Stanfield is getting candid with his personal life as he recently opened up to GQ Style about his alcoholism addiction after alluding about it in a since-deleted Instagram post last fall. He tells the publication how this is new for him to discuss publicly, but wants to encourage people who may struggle with bad habits that they can “get past” it.

“This is something I never really had talked about before, but I think it’s something that I need to talk about because I want people to understand that it’s something that you can get through, that it’s something that you can get past,”  he tells the outlet. “And I want people to feel empowered by the fact that the person they’re looking at on that screen has gone through addiction and survived it.”

He recognized the dependency after lashing out at a masseuse during a massage treatment. “All of a sudden, I got so anxious during it that I just got up, canceled the massage, and told [the masseuse] to leave,” he explained. “I just thought, I’m anxious, let me just drink some wine. As soon as I drink the wine, the anxiety goes away.” Due to the stresses of consistent bookings in films and living through a global pandemic, The Harder They Fall star decided to enter rehab, receiving support from actors like Paris Jackson and Jamie Lee Curtis, who helped him kick a cigarette habit in the past.

“I probably said something to the effect of ‘You’re a gorgeous, talented, smart, young father with huge opportunities ahead of you: Don’t fuck it up by dying of cancer that you can prevent,’” she recalled. Get ready for more LaKeith Stanfield on your screens as the third season of Atlanta airs on March 24th on FX.
