Taraji P. Henson, the Golden Globe-winning actress, is expressing her unwavering support for her "The Color Purple" co-star Fantasia Barrino, whom she fondly considers a day-one supporter.

In an interview with PEOPLE at the Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Cinema & Television in Century City, Calif., Henson shared her admiration for Barrino, dating back to her time on "American Idol." Henson recalled being a devoted fan during Barrino's stint on the reality musical competition series, where she became the youngest contestant to win at just 19 years old in 2004.

“I’ve always been a fan of hers, and I was a huge champion for her on ‘American Idol,’” Henson expressed. “I voted as many times as I could, finger went numb. And also my grandfather, who passed away about 20 years ago, was a huge fan of hers. So I’m showing love through him to her.”

Barrino's victory on "American Idol" garnered widespread praise, with her talent and authenticity shining through, even earning admiration from the notoriously critical judge Simon Cowell.

Both Henson and Barrino are gearing up for their roles in the upcoming film adaptation of "The Color Purple," based on Alice Walker's acclaimed 1982 novel. Barrino will portray Celie, while Henson will take on the role of Shug Avery. The film boasts an ensemble cast featuring Halle Bailey, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, H.E.R., Ciara, Louis Gossett Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jon Batiste, David Alan Grier, and Deon Cole. Scheduled for a Christmas release, the highly anticipated adaptation is poised to captivate audiences with its stellar cast and powerful narrative.
