Google building AI chatbot for McDonald’s workers

In a strategic move towards leveraging cutting-edge technology, McDonald's Corp. has partnered with Alphabet Inc.'s Google to develop a chatbot named "Ask Pickles."

This advanced chatbot is designed to provide swift and accurate answers to queries from McDonald's restaurant staff, covering a spectrum of topics ranging from equipment maintenance procedures, such as cleaning an ice cream machine, to operational guidelines.

The chatbot, trained on comprehensive resources including manuals and real-time data generated by restaurant equipment, is anticipated to enhance productivity by offering immediate guidance to workers in an industry where time is of the essence.

McDonald's is embarking on this initiative as part of its broader deployment of Google Cloud's data and generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools across its global network of restaurants. The integration of technology and digital solutions has become increasingly pivotal to the fast-food giant's operations.

The chain's embrace of technology is evident in its mobile app, self-service kiosks, and delivery services, which collectively contribute over 40%—equivalent to nearly $9 billion—of the sales generated by both franchised and company-operated stores in its top six markets, according to third-quarter financial reports.

Brian Rice, McDonald’s Global Chief Information Officer, emphasized the company's commitment to fully unlocking the potential of technology and harnessing the scale of its operations. As part of this technological transformation, Google Cloud's edge computing technology will play a crucial role. This technology allows retailers to run systems like kiosks on local servers connected directly to individual stores, enhancing reliability, processing speed, and data collection capabilities.

The collaboration aims to provide restaurant managers with real-time insights, potentially notifying them about maintenance requirements or equipment efficiency. McDonald's plans to implement hardware and software upgrades across thousands of its restaurants in the coming year. The data collected through these upgrades could offer a comprehensive view of equipment performance, enabling informed decision-making and potentially optimizing supplier relationships to reduce downtime.

The partnership with Google Cloud also involves exploring applications for generative AI. Given McDonald's ambitious growth target of surpassing 50,000 restaurants by 2027, the vast amount of data generated across its network will be used to train AI models, enhancing their capabilities over time.

By unifying various digital platforms under a single software platform powered by Google Cloud, McDonald's aims to streamline the deployment of upgrades and ensure a consistent ordering experience for its customers.
