Ford's latest announcement regarding its production of the first-ever plug-in hybrid Ranger model at the Silverton Assembly Plant in Tshwane is making waves in the automotive industry.

The company is investing a substantial R5.2 billion to modernize the facility, making it capable of manufacturing plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

According to Andrea Cavallaro, the Operations Director at Ford's International Markets Group, this investment brings the total manufacturing commitment to South Africa to approximately R33 billion. "It signifies our dedication to the country, our workforce, and our vast network of suppliers," Cavallaro emphasized.

The enhancements at Ford's Silverton Assembly Plant will encompass the construction of a new battery pack assembly plant, integrated within the main facility. Furthermore, the Chassis Plant located in the Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone is set to receive substantial upgrades, including modifications to robotic systems, welding equipment, control mechanisms, conveyors, and skids.

In addition to these modifications, vehicle assembly operations are being adapted to facilitate the production of the Ranger PHEV, focusing on aspects like trim, chassis, and final assembly. This adaptation includes the introduction of new handling equipment, turnover fixtures, charging infrastructure, leak detection systems, testing equipment, and repair areas.

Cavallaro also stated that, "As with the current Ranger models, the new Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will be exported to Europe as part of our commitment to offer a wide range of powertrain options for customers in this important mid-size pickup segment." Additionally, the Silverton plant will supply vehicles to Australia and New Zealand, marking a significant milestone in nearly two decades.

However, Ford has yet to confirm whether the Ranger PHEV will be available for purchase in South Africa.

In terms of the Ranger PHEV's powertrain, Ford pairs a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo petrol engine with an electric motor and a rechargeable battery. This configuration allows the vehicle to operate in pure electric mode, offering an impressive range of 45 kilometers. Ford also assures customers that the Ranger PHEV will maintain the towing and payload capabilities that they expect from a Ranger. Moreover, it will feature Ford's Pro Power Onboard system, which equips the vehicle with power outlets in the cabin and cargo bed, facilitating the use of tools at a worksite or appliances at a campsite.

Alongside the Ranger PHEV announcement, Ford has unveiled an expansive expansion plan for its product portfolio in South Africa, reinforcing its commitment to offering distinctive products and services to its customers, as articulated by Kay Hart, the President of Ford's International Markets Group.

The new models it announced include:

  • The off-road-focussed Ranger Tremor
  • The comfort and luxury-focused Ranger Platinum
  • The seventh-generation Mustang and several variants, including the Mach-E, Ford’s first electric car in South Africa
  • New Tourneo and Transit models
  • The Ford Territory SUV
