In the wake of the Springboks' victory in the 2023 Rugby World Cup (RWC), Takealot and Samsung are set to provide over 800 shoppers with refunds totaling approximately R10 million.

Takealot's BackTheBucks initiative pledged to offer a full refund to purchasers of five specific Samsung TV models if the Springboks successfully defended their world champion title in France. The eligible Samsung 4K TV options included one 43-inch, 50-inch, and 70-inch model, along with two 65-inch variants.

To qualify for the promotion, customers needed to order these TVs between August 16, 2023, and September 9, 2023, a day after the 2023 RWC commenced. Initially, 737 units were allocated to the promotion, but Takealot increased this number due to heightened demand following the Springboks' notable victories over New Zealand and Wales in warm-up games leading to the tournament.

Following the Springboks' narrow victory over the All Blacks with a score of 12–11 in the final on October 28, 2023, Takealot confirmed that it had refunded 815 customers for their purchases of 867 qualifying TVs. Takealot stated, "Takealot and Samsung have honored their commitment by fully refunding millions in TV purchases."

According to the competition's rules, the refunds can be used as credit on a Takealot account or refunded directly through the original payment method. While specific numbers were not disclosed in the release, Takealot indicated to News24 that the total value of the refunds was around R10 million.

MyBroadband sought further details about the refund values, but Takealot did not confirm the figures mentioned in the report.

It's worth noting that News24 is part of the Media24 group, which is owned by Naspers, the same company that owns Takealot.

This is the second instance in which Takealot has refunded customers for their Samsung TV purchases following a Springboks' World Cup win. The first campaign in 2019 resulted in 346 shoppers receiving a combined refund of R4 million after the Springboks emerged victorious in the RWC held in Japan.
