Whoopi Goldberg's relationship with fashion has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years. This iconic figure, once criticized and included on worst-dressed lists, has now become a trailblazer in the world of fashion.

On the evening of Thursday, October 19, the EGOT winner was awarded the American Icon award by Fashion Group International at their 39th annual Night of Stars gala in New York City. While on the red carpet, Goldberg reminisced about an outfit she wore 30 years ago and how that moment significantly impacted her fashion journey. During an interview with Page Six Style, she recollected the attire she donned at the 1993 Academy Awards, an outfit that received widespread criticism. Her ensemble featured a lime green and purple jumpsuit adorned with crystals, accompanied by a matching jacket, and she completed the look with heels bearing the same pattern.

Reflecting on that time, she admitted that the harsh critique of her style on that night left her feeling insecure. "It hurt my feelings, I'm not going to lie. It hurt my feelings," she shared with the outlet. She further explained, "It kept me from dressing up for a very long time. You have to remember, in those days, they would say things and you'd think, 'Do I really look that ridiculous?'"

Despite being considered a fashion blunder by some, the film and TV star revealed that her inspiration for that outfit came from Lucille Ball, the beloved star of "I Love Lucy."

"Lucy would always come out in these great ensembles. And I thought, I would like to wear that! And green is not a color I would normally wear; let me try it!" she noted.

When asked if she still stands by that fashion moment today, she confidently replied, "Absolutely."
