Comedian Chris Rock and Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg are teaming up for a biographical film chronicling the life and accomplishments of the late civil rights luminary, Martin Luther King Jr.

In the final stages of negotiation, Rock is expected to take on the role of director and producer, while Spielberg will serve as the executive producer for the project. The film draws its inspiration from Jonathan Eig's highly acclaimed best-selling biography, "King: A Life," which garnered a National Book Award nomination and was lauded as the "definitive" account of this influential figure by The New York Times. Universal Pictures is backing this biographical drama, although details about the cast and the start of production for the yet-to-be-titled film remain undisclosed.

This undertaking is not Rock's first foray into directing; the seasoned actor has previously directed multiple films, including "Head of State" and "I Think I Love My Wife."

In a recent Netflix stand-up special titled "Selective Outrage," Rock addressed the widely publicized Will Smith slap incident, marking a notable event as the streaming platform's inaugural live-streamed production.
