MultiChoice is set to discontinue its Showmax Pro sports streaming service within the next two months, marking approximately three years since its initial launch.

According to information shared in a FAQ post on the company's website, the current form of Showmax Pro will be phased out by November 30, 2023, to make way for an upcoming Showmax relaunch. MultiChoice has entered into a partnership with Comcast’s NBCUniversal to revamp Showmax by incorporating technology from the Peacock streaming service.

Starting from October 1, 2023, Showmax Pro will no longer accept new subscriptions. For customers with auto-renewing subscriptions, charges will cease by October 30, 2023. These customers can continue streaming Showmax Pro until the end of their current billing cycle.

MultiChoice has revealed plans to introduce a new sports offering centered around English Premier League (EPL) football, accompanied by new pricing, which will be announced soon.

Showmax Pro currently provides live streaming of football, athletics, select boxing and fighting events, as well as eSports. Despite some critics highlighting the EPL as a strength, the absence of rugby, cricket, tennis, motorsport, and golf limited its appeal as an alternative to DStv Premium. In response to the shutdown, existing Showmax Pro customers in South Africa will be offered a DStv Compact Plus Stream package at the same price as Showmax Pro.

This exclusive deal will be communicated to existing Showmax Pro customers through emails from both Showmax and DStv, outlining further details.

In specific markets, existing Showmax Pro subscribers will have the opportunity to access more live sports from SuperSport, a range of live channels, and more via an exclusive DStv Stream and Showmax bundle deal.

Customers opting for this bundle will enjoy over 115 live channels, complete access to the DStv video-on-demand library, and continued full access to Showmax's entertainment catalog. Given that Showmax Pro presently costs R349 and the DStv Compact Plus streaming package is priced at R469, subscribers will effectively save R120 per month.

The bundled live sports include the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, UEFA Champions League, along with other sports like the NBA, NFL, and UFC.

For the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, existing Showmax Pro subscribers will be presented with a DStv Stream package at the same price as Showmax Pro, granting access to additional live sports from SuperSport, including the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and supplementary sports like the NBA, NFL, and UFC.

MultiChoice clarified that the DStv Stream offers are not available to Showmax Pro mobile customers, but assured that other mobile offers would be considered in the future.
