Meghan Markle is taking a self-care day in lieu of Prince Charles’ coronation ceremony this weekend.

According to the royal reporter and author Omid Scobie, the Duchess of Sussex is reportedly not attending the celebration where her father-in-law will be crowned King Charles III to avoid unintentionally stealing the spotlight. In a statement last month, Buckingham Palace confirmed that Markle would not be at the ceremony of the King and Queen Camilla at Londons Westminster Abbey, writing that it was pleased to confirm that The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on 6th May. The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. In an interview on ITVs This Morning on Wednesday, May 3, the author of Markle and Prince Harrys biography Finding Freedom told reporters that he disagreed with that story to some extent, claiming that he also knows from friends of hers that shes protecting her peace as well.

Scobie continued, She is aware of how much of the spotlight goes on her when she sets even a foot near the story. And I think a lot of that, although its often portrayed as intentional that she wants to steal the spotlight, but in this case, [if] she had simply come over and stood next to her husband, I would imagine the commentary and the narrative on the day would be very different for the days to follow. The journalist also claimed that some members of the royal family were pleased with the decision. And I would put it down to the fact that so much of the attention then goes on someone who they would rather the attention didnt go onto, Scobie added. The writer cited the couples history with the media noting that it was all down to the fact that everyone was always talking about them, the attention was always on them at times when it shouldnt have been.
