The new film will center around her great-grandson’s college graduation, where untold tales from the family’s past surface threatening to ruin the celebratory reunion. While Tyler Perry is on the record promising to retire the bold and irreverent grand-matriarch after 2019’s A Madea Family Funeral and his 2020 live Farewell Play Tour, he told Variety in 2020 that the pandemic changed his mind, stating: “The amount of joy and laughter that it [Madea] brought to so many people, that’s what I think is missing.
We need that laughter and that joy.” Shot last summer entirely at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Ga., A Madea Homecoming reportedly has a budget of more than $20 million and has been parodying Netflix classics from the past for promotion. In one Instagram post, for example, he dubs The Crown, “The Frown,” and then rewrote Beyoncé’s Homecoming, as “Homegoing” in another, with the caption: “I want to thank my incredible Moth-hive.” The movie will feature familiar faces from the past in the cast, from Tamela Mann as Cora and David Mann as Mr. Brown to Cassi Davis Patton as Aunt Bam. Additionally, A Madea Homecoming is also expected to include a guest appearance from Brendan O’Carroll as Agnes Brown.
