The Grammy winner was in the West African country earlier this month, Chance the Rapper, who was in the West African nation earlier this month with Vic Mensa, wants to celebrate by returning in July. Chance wrote on Twitter, “Ghana will celebrate it [sic] 65th year since it FOUGHT and gained its independence. I wanna go back in a big group in July. I promise you’ll feel at home .” Chance met with President Akufo-Addo while in Ghana.
Ghana was inhabited in pre-colonial times by a number of ancient, predominantly Akan kingdoms, including the inland Ashanti Empire, the Akwamu, the Akyem, the Bonoman and the Fante, among others. The nation’s first prime minister was Kwame Nkrumah, an impassioned anti-colonial leader, who became the first African head of state to promote the concept of Pan-Africanism. Nkrumah brought together the philosophy of Marcus Garvey and W.E.B. Du Bois into his leadership of Ghana, including principles of freedom and justice, equity and free education for all, irrespective of ethnic background, religion or creed.
