Following the devastating news of the passing of designer Virgil Abloh on Sunday (Nov. 28) Mercedes-Benz is honoring the groundbreaking visionary with a special Project MAYBACH installation. Announcing the news in an official press release on Wednesday (Dec. 1), Project MAYBACH with Virgil Abloh, is an installation in homage to the visionary, trusted partner and collaborator. Project MAYBACH is a collaborative electric show car, from the G-Class, that is designed to “inspire the next generation, and forever question the status quo,” the release states.

“Mercedes-Benz is devastated to hear of the passing of Virgil Abloh. Our sincere thoughts are with Virgil’s family and teams. Now opening the world of our collaboration, and Virgil’s unique vision, to the public, we want to respectfully celebrate the work of a truly unique design talent, who created endless possibilities for collaboration through his unbridled imagination and inspired all that knew his work,” says Mercedes-Benz AG.

Abloh and Gorden Wagener, chief design officer Daimler AG, collaborated to push the luxurious identity “with a new design language and pushed the boundaries of function, style, and collaborative creativity.” The two-seater automobile is a battery-electric off-road coupé nearly 20 feet long with larger-than-life Gran Turismo proportions, off-road wheels and unique attachments, inspired by the great outdoors. Miami’s Rubell Museum has opened its doors to showcase Project MAYBACH to the public on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2.
