Durban locals told to show proof of residence at ‘community checkpoints’

Durban residents are being pulled over at makeshift checkpoints created by members of the community to show proof of residence to those unofficially monitoring certain routes. The request for locals to ‘provide their papers’ harks back to some very dark days.

One social media user has branded the move as ‘apartheid 2.0’, invoking painful memories of dom passes and the limitations on movement that black citizens faced before the advent of democracy. As looting and riots still remain a threat on Thursday, those who have taken the law into their own hands have chosen a very concerning path. Two wrongs don’t make a right, and although the intention behind these community checkpoints is to prevent further destruction to stores and businesses, everyone has the right to their freedom of movement – as protected by our Constitution.

The scenes we are witnessing in and around Durban are incredibly conflicting, to say the least. Sadly, while the situation is volatile, those of you heading out for food or other supplies should be prepared for all eventualities. Umhlanga, Greenwood Park, Effingham, and several parts of the Durban CBD are all hosting these community checkpoints, and residents have been asked to ensure they don’t get caught out.
