Former Metro FM legend DJ Grant Shakoane has died

South Africans are in mourning as news of former Metro FM veteran DJ Grant Shakoane’s death surfaced on social media today, 22 April.

He was affectionately nicknamed “Shebabadoo Shebaba” as he was on the airwaves since the 1980s on Metro FM where he hosted his popular Rnb and Soul weekly show that aired on Sundays. The details around his death are still unknown at this time however, radio personality Tim Modise revealed that Shakoane was in a ‘serious condition’ as he described him as a ‘gentle giant’  last week on Twitter. “Our friend big brother, the radio ‘gentle giant’ Grant Shakoane is in serious condition at one of the hospitals in Joburg.

 

His wife informs me that he’s been in this battle for a while. Join me in praying for his recovery. We love you #GrantShakoane,” wrote Tim Modise on Twitter. In the early hours of the morning, Tim Modise tweeted about the death of Shakoane which had fans in mourning. “I’ve just learned from Wilson Nkosi that ‘the Gentle Giant’ Grant Shakoane has passed on. Like many of us and his friends, I’m saddened by the news. I extend my sympathies to Ausi Albertina family. I wish you strength. Modimo a le fodise #RIPGrantShakoane,” wrote Tim Modise.

 

Fans remembered the good times shared with Shokane’s famous words on the radio with his phrase “if it’s good, it’s Grant” being so popular it is also included in his Twitter biography. Sports broadcaster Robert Marawa, among other industry giants, shared their tributes to the legend. “Thoughts and prayers to Ausi Albertina and her loving Family!! Such a deeply sad and emotional time for one who was so deeply loved and appreciated by many!!” wrote Marawa.

 

Head of Public Diplomacy, Clayson Monyela also took to Twitter to retweet the news with a broken heart emoji. Broadcaster Ursula Chikane and journalist Nomsa Maseko shared their tributes to the legend as well. Another Twitter user also took the time to share warm memories of the veteran DJ.
