The KZN weather warnings have been bumped up once more on Tuesday, with the SA Weather Service (SAWS) confirming that a Level 9 alert has been issued.

Phemelo Zonke, a meteorologist for SAWS, stated that upgraded weather warnings are now in place for TWO regions of KZN, as the last of the torrential downpours continue to pose a danger to life. Durban and Ugu remain at risk: “We are upgrading the KZN weather warning, which means that there is a medium likelihood of severe impacts to occur. Rainfall has cleared over most parts of the province, except the south coast. The Orange Level 9 weather warning is valid for Ugu and eThekwini district municipalities [on Tuesday afternoon].”

This comes amidst a slew of terrifying scenes reaching us from the beleaguered province. KZN has been drenched by record-breaking rainfall, with some areas receiving 300mm of the wet stuff within 24 hours. Coastal regions and the surrounding suburbs of eThekwini have taken the most punishment, and with more rain set to continue throughout the afternoon, KZN’s punishment isn’t over yet. Residents in Umlazi were forced to flee from their neighbourhood earlier today, after major landslides claimed entire houses. The properties were seen sinking into the ground, as terrified locals ran to safety.
