The African National Congress (ANC) in Nkangala, Mpumalanga has confirmed the death of Emalahleni Mayor Linah Malatjie. It is understood that both Malatjie and her husband, Esau were killed in a car crash.

The accident occurred on Sunday evening, 2 January 2022. They were driving between KwaMhlanga and Emalahleni when their car collided with the Ford Ranger bakkie. The ANC in Nkangala says Malatjie’s passing leaves a huge void in the ANC and in Government. “The ANC will remember her as a committed activist who served in our structures in various capacities. She belonged to a generation of the post-apartheid activists who gave impetus to our struggle beyond the unbanning.

A vociferous opponent of gender inequality and discrimination, throughout her activism Cde Linah was in the forefront of the struggle towards the advancement of women emancipation and empowerment,” says Regional Spokesperson Sello Matshoga. The ANC has further expressed its condolences to Linah Malatjie and her husband’s families, following their deaths.

It isn’t clear whether the car accident which claimed their lives is still being investigated. The party has praised Malatjie for playing a key role in stabilising the governance and systems in the City of Emalahleni towards a financially sustainable Local Government institution. Matshoga says Malatjie’s focus as mayor was on the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme which was underway across the City. “Comrade Linah Malatjie’s passing is a great loss to the Movement, the community of Emalahleni and society at large.

We are forever grateful for her selfless contribution to the freedom of the people of South Africa and the enhancement of service delivery within the City of Emalahleni. To this end, the ANC conveys its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, the City of Emalahleni and the entire liberation movement. We wish them strength and fortitude during this difficult time”

ANC Regional Spokesperson Sello Matshoga: She has been described as a cadre who understood that the ranks of the ANC needed to be swelled. Malatjie’s death comes just months after Joburg Mayor Jolidee Matongo was also killed in a car crash.
